XML Formatter & Validator

Validate XML and format structural documents locally, without silently rewriting mixed text content.

Validate locally. This tool reads pasted XML only in your current browser tab. It does not fetch referenced URLs, schemas, or external entities.

Retention
The tool's working state is kept only while this page is open. Inputs and results are not saved to persistent storage by Got A Tool.
Export
The tool may prepare a result after you run it. It downloads or copies it only when you choose that action.

Advertising and analytics are separate site services. We do not send selected tool input to them. Read the Privacy Policy for details.

How it works

Validate XML before you share or import it

01

Paste the source

Paste one XML document directly into the editor. Nothing is uploaded.

02

Check the structure

The validator reports malformed nesting, quotes, or entity references instead of trying to repair them.

03

Copy a safe format

For structural XML, copy the readable indented form after reviewing it.

Important limit

Valid XML is not automatically valid for a particular system.

This page checks XML well-formedness only. It does not fetch or validate XSD, DTD, namespaces required by another application, business rules, signatures, or referenced files. It also refuses to add indentation to mixed text-and-element content because whitespace can be meaningful there.

No repair guesses

Malformed input is reported instead of silently repaired.

Mixed content protected

Formatting is withheld when added whitespace might change the document.

Structural summary

Review the root element plus element and attribute counts.

Local processing

Pasted XML stays in the browser tab.

FAQ

Common questions

Does this validate my XML schema?

No. It checks whether the document is well-formed XML, not whether it meets a particular XSD or application rule.

Why is there no formatted copy?

Your document contains mixed text and child elements. Adding indentation could alter meaningful whitespace, so the tool leaves the validated source untouched.

Does it fetch linked files or DTDs?

No. It does not make network requests for schemas, referenced resources, or external entities.
