How it works

Sales Tax Calculator: a practical guide

A sales tax calculator helps you add a stated tax rate to a pre-tax price or separate the tax from a total that already includes it. It keeps the currency unit you enter and makes the two calculation directions explicit.

  1. STEP 01

Choose whether your entered amount is before tax or already includes tax.

  2. STEP 02

Enter the amount and the tax rate that applies to the transaction.

  3. STEP 03

Review the price before tax, tax amount, and total, then confirm them against the final seller or tax-authority information.

What this tool does and its limits

For a pre-tax price, the tax is the price multiplied by the stated rate and rounded to cents. For a tax-inclusive total, the pre-tax amount is the total divided by one plus the stated rate, rounded to cents; tax is the remaining cents. Tax laws and checkout totals can also include exemptions, local surtaxes, shipping, fees, or different rounding rules. This tool is an estimate, not tax advice.

Inputs, selected files, and results stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to Got A Tool or save them to persistent storage.

Questions

Sales Tax Calculator details

Can I use a tax-inclusive price?

Yes. Choose “Separate tax from total,” then enter the amount that already includes tax and the applicable rate.

Does this find my local tax rate?

No. Enter a rate you have already verified. This tool does not use your location or look up tax rules.

Why could a seller show a slightly different total?

Sellers can apply jurisdiction-specific rounding, exemptions, shipping, fees, and additional surtaxes. Confirm the checkout or official amount.

Does this convert currencies?

No. Every result uses the same currency units as the amount you enter.
