How it works

Pace Calculator: a practical guide

A pace calculator turns a distance and elapsed duration into a pace and average speed. Choose kilometers or miles before entering the distance so the result does not silently assume a unit.

  1. STEP 01

Choose kilometers or miles for your distance.

  2. STEP 02

Enter a positive distance and whole elapsed hours and minutes.

  3. STEP 03

Calculate to review pace per unit and average speed in both common distance units.

What this tool does and its limits

Pace is total elapsed minutes divided by distance. Average speed is distance divided by elapsed hours. This version accepts whole hours and minutes, not seconds, and treats the duration as elapsed time. It does not account for pauses, terrain, GPS error, course measurement, weather, fitness, training load, or medical considerations.

Inputs, selected files, and results stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to Got A Tool or save them to persistent storage.

Questions

Pace Calculator details

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is the time needed for one kilometer or mile; speed is the distance covered per hour. Faster movement means a lower pace and a higher speed.

Can I calculate a walking pace?

Yes. The arithmetic applies to any activity when your distance and elapsed time are known.

Why are minutes limited to 59?

Hours and minutes are separate time fields. Put full hours in the hours field and the remaining minutes in the minutes field.

Does it include stopped time?

It uses the elapsed duration you enter. Choose a duration that matches the type of pace you want to review.
