How it works
Time Duration Calculator: a practical guide
A time duration calculator finds the elapsed time between two 24-hour clock times, then optionally subtracts a break. It makes overnight work explicit instead of silently assuming that an earlier end time belongs to the following day.
- STEP 01
Choose a start time and an end time using the 24-hour clock.
- STEP 02
Enter any break in whole minutes and select Ends the next day only when the end occurs after midnight.
- STEP 03
Review the elapsed and net durations as a clear clock-time check.
What this tool does and its limits
The calculator compares the two clock times and subtracts the break you enter. An end time earlier than the start is rejected unless you explicitly select Ends the next day, preventing a silent overnight assumption. It does not interpret dates, time zones, daylight-saving changes, paid or unpaid breaks, overtime, rounding rules, pay rates, or local labor requirements.
Inputs, selected files, and results stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to Got A Tool or save them to persistent storage.
Questions
Time Duration Calculator details
Does it assume an earlier end time is tomorrow?
No. Select Ends the next day when an end time occurs after midnight. Otherwise an earlier end time is treated as an input error.
What if the start and end times are the same?
They represent zero elapsed time on the same day. With Ends the next day selected, they represent a 24-hour span before the break is subtracted.
Does this handle daylight saving time or time zones?
No. It compares clock times only. Use a date- and time-zone-aware timesheet or scheduling system when daylight saving time or travel matters.
Can I use this for payroll?
Use it as a basic time check only. Payroll rules can include paid breaks, overtime, rounding, local law, and company policy that this tool does not calculate.
