How it works

Fuel Cost Calculator: a practical guide

A fuel cost calculator estimates a single trip's fuel use and cost from values you choose. It keeps the units explicit, so you can work in miles and miles per gallon or kilometers and liters per 100 kilometers without the page guessing your system.

  1. STEP 01

Choose the measurement system that matches your fuel efficiency and price.

  2. STEP 02

Enter the trip distance, fuel efficiency, and current price per gallon or liter.

  3. STEP 03

Review estimated fuel use and cost, then compare it with the conditions of your actual trip.

What this tool does and its limits

For miles and MPG, fuel used equals miles divided by miles per gallon. For kilometers, fuel used equals kilometers multiplied by liters per 100 km, divided by 100. Trip cost equals the estimated fuel used multiplied by the entered price. This is a fixed-input estimate, not a route planner or a live fuel-price service. It does not model traffic, idling, elevation, temperature, driving style, cargo, towing, tire pressure, taxes, discounts, or electric and hybrid charging.

Inputs, selected files, and results stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to Got A Tool or save them to persistent storage.

Questions

Fuel Cost Calculator details

Which fuel price should I enter?

Use the price per gallon or liter you expect to pay. The page does not retrieve a current price or add taxes, membership discounts, or rewards.

Why is liters per 100 km different from MPG?

Liters per 100 km measures fuel consumed over a fixed distance, while MPG measures distance covered per gallon. Choose the option that matches the number shown by your vehicle or fuel records.

Does this plan a route?

No. Enter the distance you already expect to drive. The calculator does not choose a route, estimate tolls, or account for detours.

Will actual fuel use match this result?

Not necessarily. The result assumes the same efficiency for the entire trip, while real use changes with driving and environmental conditions.
