How it works

Fraction Calculator: a practical guide

A fraction calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies, or divides two whole numbers or fractions and reduces the result. It keeps the primary result as a fraction so you can inspect its exact numerator and denominator instead of relying only on a rounded decimal.

  1. STEP 01

Enter a whole number or a fraction such as 3/4 in each value field.

  2. STEP 02

Choose add, subtract, multiply, or divide.

  3. STEP 03

Calculate to review the reduced fraction and its decimal approximation.

What this tool does and its limits

Fractions are reduced by dividing their numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. A negative denominator is normalized to a negative numerator. This tool accepts only simple fractions, not mixed numbers, percentages, decimals, expressions, or unit conversions. Division by zero is rejected rather than guessed.

Inputs, selected files, and results stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to Got A Tool or save them to persistent storage.

Questions

Fraction Calculator details

Can I enter a whole number?

Yes. Enter 5 to treat it as 5/1.

Can I enter a negative fraction?

Yes. Enter -3/4 or 3/-4; the displayed result places any negative sign in the numerator.

Why is the decimal different from the fraction?

The fraction is the exact reduced result. The decimal display is rounded for readability and may not terminate.

Can I enter a mixed number such as 1 1/2?

No. Convert it to an improper fraction such as 3/2 before entering it.
