How it works

Average Calculator: a practical guide

An average calculator finds the arithmetic mean of a list of numbers: add every value, then divide by how many values there are. It also shows the median, total, and range, so you can distinguish a typical middle value from a result that is pulled by an unusually high or low number.

  1. STEP 01

Paste or type whole or decimal numbers separated by commas, spaces, semicolons, or new lines.

  2. STEP 02

Calculate to check the arithmetic mean, median, total, and lowest and highest values.

  3. STEP 03

Use a weighted or domain-specific method when each value should not count equally.

What this tool does and its limits

This calculator treats every entered value equally. The arithmetic mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value after sorting, or the mean of the two middle values for an even count. It does not infer units, ignore outliers, apply weights, parse localized decimal commas, or decide which statistical measure best answers your question.

Inputs, selected files, and results stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to Got A Tool or save them to persistent storage.

Questions

Average Calculator details

What is the difference between mean and median?

The arithmetic mean adds every value and divides by the count. The median is the middle sorted value, so one unusually large or small value generally affects it less.

Can I paste values on separate lines?

Yes. New lines, commas, spaces, and semicolons all separate values in this version.

Can I enter decimal commas such as 3,5?

No. A comma separates values here. Enter decimal values with a period, such as 3.5.

Does this calculate a weighted average?

No. Every value counts once. Use a purpose-built weighted calculation when values have different weights, credits, volumes, or importance.
