How it works

Square Footage Calculator: a practical guide

A square footage calculator finds the area of one rectangle from its length and width. It lets you enter measurements in feet or meters and shows both square-foot and square-meter values so the unit conversion remains visible.

  1. STEP 01

Choose whether your length and width are measured in feet or meters.

  2. STEP 02

Enter the positive length and width of one rectangular area.

  3. STEP 03

Calculate to review the area in your chosen square unit and its equivalent.

What this tool does and its limits

Rectangle area is length multiplied by width. When you choose feet, the primary result is square feet; when you choose meters, the primary result is square meters. The calculator also displays the other common square unit for reference. It does not measure a space from an image, estimate material quantities, add installation waste, subtract openings, or handle irregular and multi-part floor plans automatically.

Inputs, selected files, and results stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to Got A Tool or save them to persistent storage.

Questions

Square Footage Calculator details

How do I calculate an L-shaped room?

Divide the room into separate rectangles, calculate each one, then add the areas. This page intentionally calculates one rectangle at a time.

Why does the result use square units?

Area is a two-dimensional measurement. A length in feet multiplied by a width in feet produces square feet.

Does this include extra material for cuts or waste?

No. It calculates geometric area only. Add a project-specific allowance separately after you review the result.

Can I use different units for length and width?

No. Use the same unit for both measurements. Convert one measurement first if needed.
