How it works

Extract text without pretending scans are text

01

Choose a PDF

Load one PDF from your device. It is opened locally in your browser.

02

Read embedded text

The tool reads the selectable text stored in each page. It does not use OCR.

03

Review empty pages

A visible marker identifies pages without selectable text before you download the TXT file.

Use the right tool

PDF text extraction and OCR solve different jobs.

Use this tool for a digital PDF whose text you can already select and copy. A scanned PDF may only contain page images, even when the words look clear on screen. This tool reports those pages instead of inventing text.

When a page is scanned

Export the relevant page as an image with PDF to JPG / PNG, then use Image to Text for clear printed English text. Check names, dates, totals, and other important text against the original.

Questions

PDF to text questions

Does this perform OCR?

No. It extracts text that is already embedded in the PDF. It does not guess handwriting or recognize text from a scanned page image.

Why does the TXT file contain page markers?

Each page begins with a marker, and pages without selectable text get an explicit message. This keeps page boundaries and missing text visible for review.

Can I use a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know its password. Enter it in the optional field before extracting. The password is used only inside your browser to open the selected file.

What does the tool not preserve?

The TXT file does not preserve the page's original visual layout, fonts, images, annotations, metadata, forms, or links. Text ordering follows the order exposed by the PDF.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Opening the PDF, extracting text, and creating the TXT download happen in your browser. Got A Tool does not receive or store the document.
