How it works

Paint Calculator: a practical guide

A paint calculator estimates the quantity for one wall from its dimensions, the total area of doors and windows, the number of coats, and the coverage printed for the chosen paint. It keeps every assumption visible so you can compare it with the product label before buying.

  1. STEP 01

Choose feet and gallons or meters and liters.

  2. STEP 02

Enter the wall dimensions, total opening area, coat count, and the paint's stated coverage.

  3. STEP 03

Review the estimate, then round up to available containers after checking the paint label and project conditions.

What this tool does and its limits

Wall area is width multiplied by height. The stated opening area is subtracted, then the remaining area is multiplied by the selected coat count and divided by the coverage value. The default coverage is only a starting assumption: use the figure printed on the product for your surface and application method. This version estimates one rectangular wall and does not separately calculate ceilings, trim, several walls, primer, texture, porosity, color changes, or overspray.

Inputs, selected files, and results stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to Got A Tool or save them to persistent storage.

Questions

Paint Calculator details

Should I use the coverage on the paint can?

Yes. Enter the coverage stated for the exact product and surface whenever available. Default figures are only starting values, not a product recommendation.

Can I subtract windows and doors?

Yes. Add their combined area in the openings field. Their area must be smaller than the total wall area.

Does this choose a can size?

No. It returns an estimated amount. Compare that with available container sizes and round up after checking product guidance.

Does it include primer or a second color?

No. Add each primer, color, ceiling, trim, or separate surface as its own calculation with the appropriate coverage and coat count.
