Retention
The tool's working state is kept only while this page is open. Inputs and results are not saved to persistent storage by Got A Tool.
Export
The tool may prepare a result after you run it. It downloads or copies it only when you choose that action.

How it works

Convert one subtitle file in three reviewable steps

01

Choose SRT or WebVTT

Open one UTF-8 subtitle file from your device. It stays in your browser.

02

Choose the next format

Create a WebVTT or SRT caption file, or choose a plain-text transcript when timestamps are no longer needed.

03

Review and download

If a format cannot express some WebVTT data, the tool names that trade-off and waits for your confirmation.

No hidden conversion

A caption format and a transcript are different outputs.

SRT and WebVTT both store cue timing and text, but WebVTT can also carry headers, notes, regions, styles, and cue settings. Plain text intentionally leaves all timing behind. Pick the output that matches the next editor or player.

SRT to WebVTT

Creates a standard WEBVTT header and preserves every readable cue time and text line.

WebVTT to SRT

Works for readable cues, but asks before omitting VTT-only headers, notes, regions, styles, or cue settings.

Plain-text transcript

Combines each cue into a readable line and intentionally omits cue numbers and timestamps.

No upload

Reading, conversion, preview preparation, and download take place on your device.

FAQ

Common questions

Does it create subtitles from video or audio?

No. This tool converts an existing SRT or WebVTT text file. It does not transcribe, translate, burn captions into video, or inspect a media file.

Why do some WebVTT files need confirmation for SRT?

SRT has no place for WebVTT-only header metadata, notes, style blocks, regions, or cue settings. The tool reports their presence and requires confirmation before creating a copy that omits them.

Does a TXT transcript keep timestamps?

No. A TXT export is deliberately timestamp-free. It keeps each cue's text as written, including any inline cue markup, so it does not guess how markup should be rewritten.

Are subtitle files uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted locally in your browser. Got A Tool does not receive or store it.
