How it works

Savings Goal Calculator: a practical guide

A savings goal calculator estimates the regular monthly contribution needed to reach a target under one clear fixed-rate scenario. It treats your starting balance separately so you can see how the assumed rate and time frame affect the monthly saving estimate.

  1. STEP 01

Enter a positive goal and a starting balance that does not exceed it.

  2. STEP 02

Enter a fixed annual rate assumption and a whole-number time frame.

  3. STEP 03

Review the monthly amount, projected balance, and the assumptions before using it in a financial decision.

What this tool does and its limits

The calculator compounds the balance monthly and adds each monthly contribution at the end of the month. It rounds the required contribution up to the next cent, so the projected balance can exceed the target slightly. If the starting balance alone is projected to exceed the goal, the required monthly contribution is zero. The calculation is one fixed-rate illustration; it excludes taxes, fees, inflation, withdrawals, rate changes, contribution timing, account limits, and investment losses.

Inputs, selected files, and results stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to Got A Tool or save them to persistent storage.

Questions

Savings Goal Calculator details

Does this guarantee I will reach the goal?

No. It uses the fixed rate and contribution timing you enter only to illustrate a scenario. Actual rates, returns, fees, taxes, and deposits can differ.

When is the contribution added?

It is added at the end of every month after that month's assumed interest is applied.

What if my starting balance is already enough?

If that starting balance is projected to meet or exceed the target under the stated rate, the tool shows a zero monthly contribution.

Does this include inflation?

No. The target is treated as a fixed nominal amount. Consider inflation and the purchasing power you need separately.
