How it works
ROI Calculator: a practical guide
An ROI calculator compares an initial investment with its final value and reports the net gain or loss as a percentage of the starting amount. It is a simple two-value comparison, useful for a first check when both amounts use the same currency or unit.
- STEP 01
Enter the amount initially invested or spent.
- STEP 02
Enter the final amount received or remaining after the period you are comparing.
- STEP 03
Calculate to review the percentage return and the net gain or loss.
What this tool does and its limits
Return on investment is calculated as (final value minus initial investment) divided by initial investment, then multiplied by 100. A positive result indicates that the final value is greater than the initial investment; a negative result indicates a loss. This version does not annualize a return or model timing, extra deposits, withdrawals, financing, taxes, fees, inflation, risk, or currency changes.
Inputs, selected files, and results stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to Got A Tool or save them to persistent storage.
Questions
ROI Calculator details
What does ROI mean?
ROI means return on investment. Here it is the net gain or loss compared with the initial amount, expressed as a percentage.
Can ROI be negative?
Yes. When the final value is lower than the initial investment, the calculation shows a negative percentage and a negative net result.
Does this annualize the return?
No. It compares only two values and does not use dates. Returns over different time periods are not directly comparable without an annualized calculation.
Does it include fees or taxes?
Only if you include them in the final value yourself. The tool does not estimate fees, taxes, inflation, or other investment costs.
