JSON to YAML Converter

Convert valid JSON into explicit YAML locally, with text values quoted to preserve their meaning.

Local conversion. JSON is parsed and converted only in this browser tab. The tool does not upload, fetch, or store your source.

YAML output

Review the output. Text keys and text values are quoted intentionally, so strings such as true or 2026-10-19 stay text when another YAML-aware tool reads them.

Storage and export controls

Retention
The tool's working state is kept only while this page is open. Inputs and results are not saved to persistent storage by Got A Tool.
Export
The tool may prepare a result after you run it. It downloads or copies it only when you choose that action.

Advertising and analytics are separate site services. We do not send selected tool input to them. Read the Privacy Policy for details.

How it works

Convert valid JSON into explicit, reviewable YAML

01

Paste valid JSON

Paste one JSON value: an object, array, string, number, boolean, or null. Nothing leaves this browser tab.

02

Convert locally

The tool parses JSON and writes a deterministic YAML copy with two-space indentation.

03

Review and use it

Read the YAML, then copy it or download a .yaml file for the next step in your workflow.

Deliberate limits

One direction keeps the conversion clear.

This page converts JSON to YAML only. YAML permits anchors, custom tags, comments, and several ways to write the same value; accepting that syntax would require interpretation beyond a predictable format conversion. Every text key and value is quoted so YAML readers do not mistake text that looks like a date, number, or boolean for another type.

No uploads

Your JSON stays in the browser and no network request is needed for conversion.

Type-safe text

Text values are quoted to preserve their meaning when YAML is read later.

Nested data supported

Objects and arrays use consistent two-space indentation, including empty structures.

Review before use

The result is a text conversion. Validate it with the application that will consume it.

FAQ

Common questions

Does this convert YAML back to JSON?

No. This page deliberately converts valid JSON to YAML only, so it does not need to guess how to interpret YAML-only syntax.

Why are ordinary words quoted in the YAML output?

YAML can treat unquoted text such as true or date-looking values as a boolean or date. Quoting text keeps it a string.

Are pasted configuration values uploaded?

No. The JSON is parsed and converted locally in your browser. It is not uploaded, fetched, or saved by this tool.
