How it works

Create a Compose block without exposing a secret value

01

Choose an .env file

The file is read in this browser so its assignment lines can be checked.

02

Select only names

Review each usable variable name yourself. Values are never displayed or copied into the output.

03

Copy the block

Paste the selected environment block inside the service that needs those variables.

What it creates

A reference to each value, not a copy of it.

For a selected DATABASE_URL name, the output is DATABASE_URL=${DATABASE_URL}. Docker Compose reads the real value from its own environment or an accompanying .env file.

Keep the source file private

The downloaded YAML contains variable names only. Keep the original .env file outside source control and use your deployment platform's secret management for production credentials.

Questions

.env to Docker Compose Mapper questions

Are secret values uploaded or shown?
No. The selected file is processed in your browser. The review list and the generated block contain variable names only, never their assigned values.
Why are no variable names selected by default?
A Compose service should receive only the variables it needs. Start with an empty selection so you can make that choice deliberately.
Can this build a whole docker-compose.yml file?
No. It creates just an environment block. Paste it into the appropriate service in an existing Compose file and review the surrounding configuration.
Why is a line not offered for output?
Malformed assignments, duplicate names, and unclosed quoted values are excluded until you correct the source file. The tool reports the line number and does not show its value.
Can I compare two .env files?
Use .env Semantic Diff to compare variable names and create an empty-value template instead.
