.env Semantic Diff
Compare .env files by key, find missing variables, flag simple syntax issues, and create a safe empty-value template locally.
Data handling
Storage and export controls
- Retention
- The tool's working state is kept only while this page is open. Inputs and results are not saved to persistent storage by Got A Tool.
- Export
- The tool may prepare a result after you run it. It downloads or copies it only when you choose that action.
Advertising and analytics are separate site services. We do not send selected tool input to them. Read the Privacy Policy for details.
How it works
Compare environment-file structure without revealing values
Use a structural comparison when you need to see which variable names belong in a configuration file but do not want the tool to display secret values.
Step 01
Add both .env files
Choose the source and comparison files from your device.
Step 02
Review names and syntax
See missing, extra, and malformed variable entries without exposing their values in the results.
Step 03
Create a safe template
Download an empty-value template only after reviewing the names you want to keep.
What this tool does and its limits
- The comparison is about variable names and file structure. It does not verify that two secret values are equivalent.
- The tool never runs shell syntax or contacts the services named in the file.
Practical guide
Read the Change-review checklist
Choose the comparison that matches the file, inspect the reported differences, and keep the source until the reviewed copy is ready to use.
