How it works
Debt Payoff Calculator: a practical guide
A debt payoff calculator estimates how long one balance would take to repay with a fixed annual rate and the same payment every month. It makes the interest assumption and payment amount visible, rather than silently applying a lender's minimum-payment policy.
- STEP 01
Enter the current balance in your chosen currency units.
- STEP 02
Enter the fixed annual rate and the monthly amount you plan to pay.
- STEP 03
Review the payoff time, total interest, and limits before comparing the estimate with your account terms.
What this tool does and its limits
The calculator applies one twelfth of the stated annual rate each month, then makes the entered payment. The last payment is reduced to the remaining balance plus that month's interest. The payment must exceed the first month's interest, otherwise the balance would not decrease under this model. This version models one balance only and does not combine debts, recommend a payment strategy, or use creditor-specific billing rules.
Inputs, selected files, and results stay in your browser. The tool does not upload them to Got A Tool or save them to persistent storage.
Questions
Debt Payoff Calculator details
Does this include new purchases or fees?
No. The balance is assumed to receive no new charges, fees, penalties, or other additions while it is being repaid.
Why does the payment need to exceed the first month's interest?
If it does not, the payment would cover only interest or less, so the original balance would not fall under this fixed-rate calculation.
Is this the same as my lender's payoff quote?
No. Lenders can use daily interest, payment-date rules, promotional rates, fees, and other contract terms. Confirm any payoff amount directly with the creditor.
Can I use this for multiple debts?
Use one calculation per balance. This version does not allocate a shared budget or choose between debt-repayment strategies.
