Prepare text before you share it with an AI service

Before you paste a prompt, a configuration file, or a network log into another service, decide what the recipient needs to see and what should stay private. Clean a copy, not the only original.

Start with the smallest useful copy

Remove unrelated text and keep the original locally. A redacted copy can reduce accidental exposure, but it does not grant permission to share confidential material or replace your organisation's review process.

1. Match the review to the kind of data

Mask known email addresses, phones, valid IDs, cards, and selected exact words. Names are not guessed automatically.

2. Do not ask a tool to guess

Different values can look similar. A project name may be confidential but not match a personal-data pattern; a token may have an unknown format. Add an exact custom word where the tool offers one, and inspect the preview before download. If a value is not clearly covered, remove it manually from the copy instead of assuming it is safe.

  • Keep the original text or file separate from the shareable copy.
  • Read the tool's review message and preview before downloading.
  • Check every redacted placeholder still leaves enough context for the question you need answered.

Redaction reduces visible details; it does not guarantee that surrounding context is harmless or that a destination is approved for the material. Follow your contractual, legal, security, and workplace requirements before sharing.

3. Confirm the copy, then share deliberately

Open the downloaded copy and search for the values you intended to remove. If the answer requires the original secret or personal detail, do not paste it into a broader prompt simply to make the response more specific. Use an approved internal channel instead.

Common questions

Does masking prove that my prompt is safe to share?

No. It removes or replaces only the supported and selected values. Review remaining context and follow the rules that apply to your work.

Should I upload a sensitive file to an online converter?
